Music Work

Since the age of 6 I have been a musician, playing the drums mostly but also being able to bash out a few chords on a guitar or a piano. Through this, and with my natural talents for working with technology, I have also been involved in sound engineering and production for many years, and formalised this by studying for a BSc in Music Technology, which I graduated from in 2004.

I have worked in the past as a freelance studio engineer and producer, and currently I own my own small business doing a mix of live engineering work, and design and installation of sound systems, lighting systems and TV/audio-visual systems for bars, clubs and live music venues.

I have also worked as a DJ since around 1999 as a DJ in a huge amount of bars and clubs around Paisley and Glasgow, playing a huge variety of music.

I am experienced engineer, and am equally comfortable working both with all studio recording technology, and also in a live sound format. I can happily work with both digital and analogue systems, and I have particular experience with DigiDesign’s Pro-Tools. I can work with all MIDI technology, and am happy designing and addressing full systems as well as actually using and programming the MIDI protocol itself. I have a great knowledge of all recording techniques and processes, and of the wider, not directly technical skills needed to properly organise and run a full and successful recording session.

I am also an experienced system designer, designing and installing all levels of sound reinforcement and public address systems.

I have an extensive knowledge of speaker design and speaker technology, crossover networks, amplifiers and all of the related technologies, and I also have a good working knowledge of soundproofing and acoustics. I am happy designing full integrated systems for recording studios, recorded music playback or live sound, and can manufacture custom furniture, rack units and/or patch bays for the installation of the equipment. I can even go so far as to custom design and manufacture the actual speakers themselves or speaker systems from scratch when required.

Further, I’m also comfortable designing other related entertainment systems including lighting systems with LED and intelligent lighting, full DMX addressing and control and custom programming, and TV/audio-visual systems with sky and satellite TV input and full integration into the sound system for public performance.
